The Holy Spirit gave me a powerful revelation on what dying to self means
I know I can’t be the only one who has ever felt this way. Has it ever happened to you that you spoke in front of people, and when you got home, you were hit with the annoying feeling of regret? You replay the moment in your mind, thinking, I should have said this instead, or I wish I said it in a stronger, clearer, or more powerful way. And then all of a sudden you’re stuck in this internal struggle, wishing you could go back in time and do it all over again.
That happened to me a few weeks ago. When I got home that day, I got so sick and tired of feeling that way. I finally said, “Holy Spirit, I don’t ever want to feel like this again! I’m even getting tired of myself. Just empty me out of all of that. You come in, Holy Spirit. You take over.”
And immediately, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart and said: “Bingo.”
In that moment, I realized I had received a revelation of what it truly means to die to self.
When you come to that point, when you are absolutely tired of your own self-consciousness, fears or insecurities, that is when something shifts in your life. You stop worrying about what people say or don’t say about you. You stop obsessing over what people think of you or don’t think of you. Why? Because you’re dead to yourself. Your ego, your self-image, your need for approval… all of that begins to lose its hold.
Dying to self doesn’t mean becoming less valuable or losing your identity. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to take over and become center stage so that your confidence comes from Him and not from people. It means trusting that God can use your words even when you think they weren’t perfect. It means serving, speaking, loving, and ministering without needing applause or validation.
And when you reach that place, there’s a peace and freedom that is hard to describe. This kind of freedom comes only when the Holy Spirit takes over and it is the most wonderful thing that can happen to you.
